Department of Afan Oromo and Literature

About the Department

  • Mother Tongue Education: Following the Ethiopia's 1994 education policy, Afaan Oromo gained prominence as a language of instruction in primary schools, an official language of the Oromia region, and a subject in high schools. This created a need for qualified Afaan Oromo teachers.
  • Meeting the Need: Recognizing this need, the Oromia regional government established B.Ed. programs in Afaan Oromo at Jimma and Haramaya Universities in 2004/2005. Our university currently offers Bachelor's and Master's degrees in various Afaan Oromo programs.
  • Evolution of the Curriculum: Initially, the BA program wasn't fulfilling the diverse demand for Afaan Oromo graduates. To address this, a revised curriculum was designed in 2013, and the department now graduates professionals like journalists, public officers, translators, researchers, and artists.

The department offers:

  • Comprehensive Programs: Both undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including regular, extension, weekend, and summer options.
  • Technical Activities: Diverse learning experiences inside and outside the department, ensuring well-rounded development.
